Nederland Veterans Park profile image

Veterans Park in Nederland, TX is a memorial space to honor the brave men and women who have served the USA since the Texas War for Independence in 1836. The concept for the park developed during a conversation between City Manager Chris Duque and Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Supervisor. The park honors everyone who has worn a uniform with pride and dignity: anyone who is currently serving our great country, anyone who has served in the past during war or peace, and anyone who survived conflict or perished in it. It follows a long-standing tradition in which began during World War II when Nederland residents banded together to create the Nederland Honor Roll.

The Veterans Database & these historical pages were developed by the staff of the Marion & Ed Hughes Public to support Veterans Park. The goal of the online database is to allow visitors to learn more about the history of the veterans being honored in the Park. Having accurate records to add veterans’ names and to describe their personal stories will be an integral part of this process. The database includes a variety of photographs and documents. We also hope to add interviews conducted as part of the Library's oral history project. To submit a name for inclusion in the database, please fill out a Veterans Information Form and return it to the Marion & Ed Hughes Public Library at 2712 Nederland Avenue, Nederland, TX 77627. To download a copy of the form, click here.

The historical pages were developed to provide information about those who remained on the homefront during the various conflicts and military actions. We hope to eventually add more information to these pages. To check out the historical pages, click here.

Nederland Honor Roll -- 1943-1945

The first Nederland Honor Roll was dedicated on Sunday, July 4, 1943. The board was sponsored by the Nederland Alumni Association and Nederland Chamber of Commerce to honor all men and women in military service from Nederland. At the time Evelyn Chester was President of the Nederland Alumni Association.

The board was red, white and blue and located on the corner of Main street and Mena avenue. Today that is Boston and 13th St. There were 305 names on the board initially. New names were added as other men and women enlisted and by April 1944, the list had grown to 375 names.

In July 1945, three organizations provided a new honor roll for service men and women. The roll was located across the street from the First Baptist Church. The organizations that took part in promoting the new board were the Nederland Alumni Association, Nederland Chamber of Commerce, and Nederland Lions Club. There were approximately 500 names of men and women that were in the armed service on the honor roll from the Nederland area. In the center of the board were the names of 17 men who gave their lives during their service.

It should be noted that this was a temporary sign meant to honor Nederland's service men during WWII. We've tried to determine the fate of the wall, but have had no success at this time. The Chronicle, 22 September 1948, pg. 9 indicated that the Port Neches wartime Honor Roll was recycled by the Port Neches Junior Chamber of Commerce into a sign promoting the City and it's various civic groups. Maybe Nederland's sign was also repurposed. If we discover what happened to Nederland's Honor Roll, we'll update this information.

Overview

Veterans Park in Nederland, TX is a memorial space to honor the brave men and women who have served the USA since the Texas War for Independence in 1836. The concept for the park developed during a conversation between City Manager Chris Duque and Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Supervisor.

Veterans Park honors everyone who has worn a uniform with pride and dignity: anyone who is currently serving our great country, anyone who has served in the past during war or peace, and anyone who survived conflict or perished in it. It follows a long-standing tradition in which began during World War II when Nederland residents banded together to create the Nederland Honor Roll. It also incorporates the Memorial which was relocated from Tex Ritter Park. For more information on the Nederland Honor Wall and previous memorials and monuments see the tabs on the left.

The Park project bid was awarded to L&L General Contractors and was designed by the LaBiche Architectural Group with input from the City's Veterans' Advisory Committee. The groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled for July 27, 2015 and the phase 1 of the park was completed in October 2015. The Dedication Ceremony was held on Veterans' Day, November 11, 2015. You can view Dedication Ceremony photographs, program and flyer below. The Dedication Ceremony was the culmination of the first phase of the Veterans Park Project. Phase II and III involve plans for a statue on a monument and an electronic kiosk to support the Veterans' Database Project. We will post information on those phases as it becomes available.
