The Library's children's collection serves children from birth through 6th grade as well as parents, child-care providers and teachers. In addition to books and magazines, the collection includes educational and popular videotapes, book cassette kits, talking books, and board books.
The Young Adult materials at the Library are aimed at middle school and high school age students and concentrate on issues of interest to today's teenagers. Non-fiction books are located in the adult collection. Fiction titles are located in the Young Adult section and have a purple dot on the spine. This collection includes Graphic Novels.
The Library's collection of popular literature contains a large number and variety of best sellers, popular adult fiction and videos on all subjects. The library provides booklists of suggested titles and authors on a variety of topics and staff members are also available for reader advice.
Videos and DVDs
The Library lends a variety of cultural, educational and recreational videocassettes in VHS format and DVDs. These items are available for home use only and may not be broadcast or duplicated. They may not be used for fundraising purposes or shown where an admission fee is charged.
A combination of five videos and DVDs may be borrowed for two days. They may not be renewed. Because the collection contains materials appealing to a wide range of interests, some items may not be suitable for all audiences and viewer discretion is advised.
Videocassettes and DVDs should be handled with care. Please store them upright, rewind videos after use and keep them away from extreme temperatures. Borrowers are responsible for damage to or loss of any audiovisual item and may be billed for replacement or repair costs. The library is not responsible for damage that may occur to equipment in the playing of library materials.
The library also has access to videos which are downloadable through the Internet from your home or office. Please check with a staff member for additional information.
The Hughes Public Library provides print access to a variety magazines. The library also has access to the TexShare online databases. The databases can be accessed through terminals at the library and many can be used via remote access from your home or office.
The Library has a browsing collection of books on cassette and CD for adults, young adults and children. These items are available on three week loan. The library is not responsible for damage to equipment when patrons use these items.
The library also has access to eAudiobooks which are downloadable through the Internet from your home or office. Please check with a staff member for additional information.
There is a small circulating CD-ROM collection. The loan period for these items is seven days and they may not be reserved or renewed. Borrowers are responsible for damage to or loss of any CD-ROM and may be billed for replacement or repair costs. The library is not responsible for damage that may occur to equipment when patrons use the CD-ROMs. Check at the circulation desk for more information on this collection.
The Library's Archive Collection contains materials such as high school annuals, city directories and local history materials. There are also a small number of microfilm reels that include local census records and newspapers. The Archive Room also houses the collection of the Nederland Historical Society. You must contact the Historical Society for information on their collection.
The Library also has a variety of reference materials that are available for research but may not be checked out. The staff also maintains a Web site containing links to Selected Reference Sites which have been chosen because of their ease of use.
